How to Vibrate Your Lips and Get a Note
To create the perfect sound from your didgeridoo, you need to start with the basics of lip vibration. Here’s how to play the didgeridoo effectively:
- Seal Your Lips: Place your lips against the mouthpiece, ensuring a perfect seal. All the air and sound should pass through the didgeridoo and exit from the bottom end.
- Soft Blowing: Blow softly while keeping your lips loose enough to vibrate. This is crucial for producing the right note.
- Experiment with Lip Positions: Try different angles and positions, such as front on, side of mouth, or bottom lip over the top.
- Moisten Your Lips: Slightly moistening your lips can improve your technique and help your lips coordinate with your brain.
- Practice Lip Vibration: Not only should you exhale air from your lungs, but you also need to vibrate your lips while emptying the air inside your mouth. This can be practiced by filling your mouth with water and pushing it out between your lips, mimicking the action needed for playing the didgeridoo.
- Puff Your Cheeks: With your throat blocked, puff your cheeks and force air through your closed lips. Once you can do this, try it on your didgeridoo.
How to Circular Breathe on the Didgeridoo
Circular breathing is essential for continuous didgeridoo play:
- Cheek Puffing: Puff your cheeks out, holding the air inside them while breathing normally through your nose.
- Force Air Out: Force the air out of your cheeks while inhaling through your nose at the same time. This can be practiced with water if you find it easier.
- Combine Blowing and Breathing: When you can produce a note on the didgeridoo and breathe in simultaneously, you’ve mastered circular breathing.
- Extend Your Note: Practice extending the duration you can hold a note while expelling one mouthful of air.
- Continuous Note: Combine the skills of blowing and circular breathing to produce a continuous note.
